Congressman George Whitesides Helps Advance Nine Pro-Veteran Bills

April 9, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Rep. George Whitesides (CA-27) voted to pass nine bills that will improve services and recognition for our nation’s veterans.

“As a proud advocate for our nation's veterans, I am committed to supporting legislation that ensures they receive the care, benefits, and recognition they deserve,” said Rep. George Whitesides. “These bills represent a significant step forward in addressing the needs of veterans and their families, from healthcare and education to protecting their rights and well-being. I am honored to cast my vote in support of these critical measures and remain dedicated to serving those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom, and I look forward to their quick passage through the Senate.”

Rep. Whitesides voted in favor of the following bills Monday night, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives and will now be sent to the Senate for consideration:

  • H.R. 1228 – Prioritizing Veterans' Survivors Act

This bill ensures that the VA Office of Survivors Assistance operates directly under the VA secretary, offering vital resources for the survivors and dependents of deceased veterans.

  • H.R. 981 – VETT Act

This bill would require postsecondary institutions seeking approval from state agencies for veterans’ education and training programs and that can’t provide the required information to notify prospective students. The Veterans Affairs Department also would have to publish online training materials and other resources for school-certifying officials.

  • H.R. 586 – Vietnam Veterans Liver Fluke Cancer Study Act

This bill calls for the VA to study and track the prevalence of bile duct cancer in Vietnam War veterans, ensuring that affected veterans receive the care they deserve.

  • H.R. 1039 – Clear Communication for Veterans Claims Act

This bill requires the VA to improve the clarity and effectiveness of the notice process for veterans filing claims, ensuring that veterans understand their rights and claims statuses.

  • H.R. 983 – Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserves Tuition Fairness Act

This bill guarantees in-state tuition for reservists and National Guard members using Montgomery GI Bill benefits, easing the financial burden on those serving in our armed forces.

  • H.R. 877 – Deliver for Veterans Act

This bill requires the VA to cover shipping costs for specially altered vehicles purchased for veterans with disabilities, helping ensure that they receive the mobility assistance they need.

  • H.R. 1912 – Veteran Fraud Reimbursement Act

This legislation provides quick reissuance of benefits to veterans who have been defrauded by fiduciaries, ensuring that if fraud victims pass away before reissuance, their dependents will receive the benefits.

  • H.R. 970 – Fairness for Servicemembers and their Families Act

This bill mandates a review of the coverage available under the Servicemembers’ and Veterans’ Group Life Insurance programs to ensure that the coverage ceiling keeps pace with inflation and adequately protects servicemembers and their families.

  • H.Con.Res. 9 – Authorizing the use of the Capitol Grounds for the National Peace Officers Memorial Service and the National Honor Guard and Pipe Band Exhibition:

This resolution allows the Fraternal Order of Police to use Capitol grounds for the 44th annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service and related exhibitions to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
