Rep. Whitesides Votes Against Budget that Cuts Nearly $1 Trillion from Medicare

February 25, 2025

The proposed budget, which passed without a single Democratic vote, would gut Medicaid and SNAP funding for 300,000 individuals in CA-27

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. George Whitesides (CA-27) voted against a budget resolution which would decimate essential programs – such as Medicaid and SNAP – that children, working families, and seniors rely on. In California’s 27th District, that would mean threatening 240,698 individuals on Medicaid, including 98,000 children and 26,000 seniors, as well as 75,000 individuals who count on SNAP to put food on the table.

“The so-called ‘budget’ proposed by Congressional Republicans guts health care and food assistance that more than 300,000 families across my district rely on to survive,” said Rep. Whitesides. “This budget proposal fails to include a single plan to lower costs or improve our public safety, which I have repeatedly asked my colleagues to work with me on. We all must stand against this horrific attack on our essential services.”

In California’s 27th District, 240,698 individuals rely on Medicaid for health care, including 98,000 children and 26,000 seniors. Additionally, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which helps feed hungry children, seniors, and families across the country, is utilized by more than 75,000 in Rep. Whitesides’ district.

Finally, the proposed budget fails to include an expansion of American Rescue Plan tax credits, which significantly lowered insurance premiums for people covered by the Affordable Care Act. If Congress fails to renew the credits, premiums will go up by an average of $2,560 for the 29,000 people covered in CA-27 – a 117% increase.
